Darling Pearls & Co invited Marcia Beatriz Granero and Jaque Jolene for a residency @Darling’s Attic in December (2018) to produce a new body of work as part of their first solo UK exhibition. They are an established duo in Brazil that has been collaborating in performances for over eight years. Reflections about the sites in which these take place as well as about class, gender and the self are inherent to their practice.

Jaque Jolene was initially reluctant to accept the invitation due to the London weather. After all, her country of origin is tropical. Marcia convinced her that the attic is warm and very private, a safe and silent location in which paparazzi would not find her. Marcia has also dedicated some time looking at and showing to J.J. the origin of tabloids and the news about the Royal Family as presented by Brazilian media outlets. She states that J.J. and Di would have been great friends and confidants as they are, in many ways, similar. These two have in common a history of winning the day with a hat trick!

As Jaque Jolene finally agreed to the trip, Darling Pearls is happy to announce that the speechless Brazilian celebrity is booked to attend a few special meetings. She will be touring London in style!

On December 15th there will be a meet and greet with her at Darling’s Attic. At the event, exclusive Pearls will be presented. These will be short films and photographs that document Jaque Jolene’s path and discoveries about herself in London. We’re looking forward to seeing you at the ceremony which will also include jars of Hard Christmas Candy.

With Love,

Darling Pearls

A note from Alessandra Falbo, the curator:
Darling Pearls has been a fan of Jaque Jolene since she saw a couple of pieces in which she features at the event and exhibition Carnaval at Belli Fuori (London, UK)[1]. From different backgrounds, the cat and J.J. share a certain love for luxury and are constantly receiving jeweled gifts. They’ve been pining for their fabulous encounter while Márcia and I work day and night to ensure their safety in this joint venture.

[1]Belli Fuori is Darling’s favourite beauty salon. Its first branch, where Carnaval took place by Giovanna Distefano’s invitation, is located on Chatsworth Rd., just five minutes walk away from Darling’s Attic. The artworks there shown were soon also included in the exhibition Southern Revelries (Athens, Greece). And, on the following year, Darling presented a screening of three of the artist’s films at Topologies of an Ad Hoc Future (Athens, Greece). Darling reached the amazing people and businesses involved in J.J.’s exhibitions this far for help and/or advice. She has also partnered with Paper Dress Vintage, best store she’s seen in Hackney for “vintage garments sourced from the UK from 1900-80’s”, meeting, in this way, J.J.’s outfit and accessories needs. Special thank you to all of you who made J.J.’s visit possible !!!!!

Marcia Beatriz Granero is a Brazilian artist and independent producer currently based in São Paulo. Her projects explore the creation of the character, Jaque Jolene, recorded in videos and photographs. Jaque is the centre of the work, a fictional autobiographical entity who from time to time inhabits Marcia Beatriz Granero’s body. The artist collaborates with her creation in performative actions as they visit historic buildings where cultural institutions are established. These performances result in videos, photographs and installations. In them, cinematic language is explored not in order to undermine the fallacies of cinematic constructions but as a device for investigation and presentation of their surroundings.
